A multitude of colorfully attired attendees assembled in the heart of Ethiopia's capital for the yearly Irreecha event during recent days.

This thanksgiving celebration is observed by the Oromo community, the biggest community, and occurs at the end of the nation's major wet season.

Annually, participants assemble around revered rivers and lakes to express gratitude to their creators for the fertile landscape that the rains have delivered.

"I've been celebrating this celebration for the past nine years," stated 25-year-old one attendee.

"To me, Irreecha represents my heritage, it showcases the honor and importance of my people."

Males, women, the senior citizens and the younger generation all participate, decorated in attention-grabbing attire and ornaments.

They chant, dance, exchange narratives and deposit newly gathered foliage and floral arrangements in water - representing life, renewal and optimism.

Worldwide Participation

This festival brings in individuals from across Ethiopia, attendees fly in from around the world.

"I visited the previous year - it was so good, so spectacular, I invited my children with me this year," expressed Claire, from Northern Ireland.

"It's wonderful. Everybody wants to say hello, everyone shows warmth and offers greetings."

Event Program

The initial day of the celebration occurred on Saturday in the capital. On the following day, celebrants made their way to a provincial location, a community near the main city.

Even though the festival has its roots in traditional beliefs, it is now celebrated by the majority of the community, without consideration for their faith.

Modern Trends

In the recent years, the quantity of individuals participating in the event has grown significantly. This is partially because of the rise of online networks, where many youth document their clothing, dance moves and musical expressions during the celebration.

Historical Significance

In the past, Irreecha was used as a stage for political demonstrations - the Oromo community have historically expressed concerns about social exclusion.

However, the recent event took place calmly, with an focus on joy, solidarity and ethnic identity.
