An Unprecedented Leader

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
